MEET OUR TEAM
Dr. Honor Ame Walesby, BS, DVM, MS, DACVS, DACVS-SA - Surgeon and Owner
Dr. Walesby graduated from the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993 and began working as a mixed animal practitioner for Community Animal Hospital in Easton, MD. In 1996, she moved to Ames, IA and completed a three year residency in Equine Surgery and earned a Masters degree with honors in Surgery. Dr. Walesby was credentialed as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2000. She continued at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine as an instructor until 2001. She managed the after-hours and daytime surgical services which provided referral soft tissue and orthopedic services. Dr. Walesby trained 900+ veterinary students and two surgery residents, conducted research, and lectured.
In 2002, Dr. Walesby was recruited as an assistant Professor of Surgery by Louisianan State University School of Veterinary Medicine. While at LSU, she trained 500+ veterinary students, 10 interns, and 5 surgery residents. She operated a surgical service which provided referral soft tissue and orthopedic services, wrote grants, developed a cell culture line, and lectured both locally and nationally.
In 2005, Dr. Walesby transitioned to small animal surgery and moved home to Timonium, MD to raise her son Ethan near family. Since her arrival, she has worked at Timonium Animal Hospital, the Metropolitan Emergency Animal Clinic, and the Emergency Veterinary Clinic before starting full-time with the MVSS in 2008.
In 2015, Dr. Walesby was recognized for surgical excellence by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and became boarded in Small Animal Surgery. These credentials make Dr. Walesby part of an elite group of surgeons within the world that hold double-boarded status in both small and large animal surgery. Dr. Walesby brings her expertise in lameness, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, ultrasound, wound care, skin grafting, and upper airway surgery with her from the academic and private practice arenas. Her broad and diverse experience brings a unique dimension to our surgery practice.
Dr. Walesby resides in Catonsville with her son, a Pug named Frank, two naked cats (Gorgeous Emiliano and Bare Nikkita) and one bearded dragon (Rosalita). She enjoys kayaking, collecting art, gardening and hiking.
Rita Valente - Receptionist
Rita has served as the receptionist for MVSS since 2001. She has followed many patients from adolescents to old-age. She has amazing recall and frequently recognizes patients and their guardians before they identify themselves. Rita resides in Westminster with her son, her German Shepherd (Lola) and her two cats (Hazelnut and Biscuit). Rita is a huge football and Jeep fan. She loves to indulge in Ravens football and four wheeling adventures.
Rick Butler - Instrument Guru and Pack Scrub
Rick has been maintaining and sterilizing the surgical instruments for MVSS since 2006. He takes great pride in cleaning, servicing and sterilizing all of the instruments, drills, saws and other items that Dr. Walesby needs to provide the best surgical care. Rick has been working in the veterinary field since 1987. Rick resides in Carney with his Pug (Ollie) and four cats (Jasper, Ginger, Edgar and Luna). Rick enjoys great films, art museums, traveling, English history and spending time with his animals.
Michelle Huntington, RVT (2010), RN (2016), BSN (2016) - Surgical Nurse and Manager
Michelle started with MVSS in 2010. She was instrumental in helping Dr. Walesby purchase, organize and run MVSS from day one. Michelle is an avid Hokie fan having earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from Virginia Tech in 2007. Michelle attended school at night while working full-time for MVSS and in 2016 she earned her RN degree from CCBC and her BSN from Towson. Michelle has returned to MVSS full-time where she says she feels "home". Michelle resides in Reisterstown with her beloved brown dog Molly, her little terrier Scout and a retired blood-donor cat named Doc. She is a talented equestrian who enjoys fox hunting, field trialing and caring for her warmblood horse Bo. On weekends Michelle can be found rooting for the Hokies and the Red Skins. GO HOKIES!
Carieanne Edmondson, RVT (2005) - Overnight Nurse
Carieanne has been providing exceptional overnight care for the patients at MVSS since 2011. She is kind, calm and gentle earning her the title of cat and dog whisperer. Carieanne can get the most nervous dog to eat and the meanest cat to take medication. She brings years of veterinary nursing knowledge to the table with special emphasis in the areas of critical care and CPR. Carieanne has work as a veterinary nurse since 1997. She enjoys volunteering her time to pet therapy and is very involved in her church community. In addition to being our full-time overnight nurse, Carieanne is also a Senior Adjunct Instructor at Howard Community College. Carieanne resides in Arbutus with her two cats (Angus and Andy).
Aleksandr Raykhel - Surgical Scrub Nurse
Aleks came to MVSS as a part-time surgical nurse in 2014. Aleks demonstrated an aptitude for veterinary surgery and quickly became the lead full-time surgical scrub nurse in 2015. Aleks is frequently found scrubbed into surgery with Dr. Walesby passing her the instruments and implants needed for each procedure. Aleks is a talented rock climber and a molecular gastronomy enthusiast. On the weekend he can be found hanging upside down in the New River Gorge or bolted into a tent on the side of a mountain or possibly concocting a recipe from ingredients whose names few can pronounce. Aleks resides in Columbia near all of his favorite things. (Wegmans and Earth Treks).
KC Ronkette - Surgical Nurse
KC came to MVSS in 2017 from Small Miracles Cat and Dog Rescue. KC has been providing nursing care for animals in the veterinary field since 2004. KC demonstrates exceptional talent in the areas of patient care, coordinating surgical patients and operating rooms, monitoring anesthesia, running treatment schedules and assisting with diagnostic procedures. KC has an extensive background in breeding, training and caring for Statesman Morgan horses. She resides in Ellicott City with her husband, son, daughter and her dog (Porter). When she is not at work, KC can be found at the barn riding and training her two Morgan horses Parker and Atlas.
Ashley Irvin - Surgical Scrub Nurse
Ashley joined the MVSS team full-time in 2017 from a surgical referral practice in Newport News, VA. Ashley can be found scrubbing into surgery with Dr. Walesby, monitoring anesthesia, performing diagnostic procedures and caring for patients. In her spare time, Ashley is enrolled in the Veterinary Nursing Program at Northern Virginia Community College and should be a registered veterinary nurse in May 2019. Ashley resides in Ellicott City with her boyfriend and three cats (Falcone, Furiosa,and Nux) and her darling dog (Meekah). Ashley enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and participating in Live Action Role Play (LARP)
