MDVSS Protect Your Pet From Sunburn

Summer is an important time to protect your pet from sunburn and ensure a safe and comfortable season for your furry friend.

Summer means longer days, warm sunshine, and plenty of time spent outdoors with your furry companions. But while you’re slathering on sunscreen to stay safe, don’t forget that your pet needs protection too. Just like humans, animals can suffer from sunburn—and it can lead to serious health issues if left unchecked. Here’s how to protect your pet from sunburn and keep them safe all summer long.

Can Pets Really Get Sunburned?

Yes, they absolutely can. Pets with light-colored fur, short coats, or exposed skin (like noses, ears, bellies, and eyelids) are especially at risk. Common signs of sunburn in pets include:

  • Red or inflamed skin
  • Dry, cracked, or peeling areas
  • Whimpering or flinching when touched
  • Excessive licking or scratching of affected areas

Severe or repeated sunburns can even increase the risk of skin cancer, especially in dogs and cats with light pigmentation.

How to Protect Your Pet From Sunburn

The good news is that preventing sunburn in pets is easier than you think. Follow these simple tips to keep your dog or cat safe in the sun:

Limit Sun Exposure During Peak Hours

The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you’re taking your pet outside, try to schedule walks or playtime during the early morning or evening hours. If they must be outdoors, make sure they have access to shade at all times.

Use Pet-Safe Sunscreen

Never apply human sunscreen to your pet—it can contain ingredients like zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which are toxic to animals. Instead, use sunscreen specifically formulated for pets. Apply it to the ears, nose, belly, and other vulnerable areas as directed on the product label.

Dress Your Pet for the Sun

Protective clothing such as lightweight shirts or sun suits designed for pets can provide a physical barrier from harmful UV rays. Look for breathable, UV-protective fabrics to keep your pet cool and shielded.

Provide Plenty of Fresh Water and Shade

Heat and sunburn often go hand-in-hand. Always make sure your pet has access to fresh, cool water and shaded areas. Portable pop-up tents or umbrellas work great at the beach, park, or even your backyard.

Check Skin Regularly

Give your pet a quick once-over during grooming sessions or after outdoor adventures. Early detection of redness, irritation, or scabbing can help you catch sunburn before it becomes severe. This is also a good opportunity to check for ticks or other unwanted pests that may hitchhike on our furry friend.

Breeds Most at Risk

Some breeds are more susceptible to sunburn due to their physical characteristics. These include:

  • Short-haired breeds (Boxers, Pit Bulls, Dalmatians)
  • Light-colored or white-furred pets
  • Hairless breeds (Chinese Crested, Sphynx cats)
  • Pets with alopecia or shaved fur

If your pet falls into any of these categories, it’s especially important to take steps to protect your pet from sunburn.
